Als Hochregallager (HRL) werden Hochregalsysteme mit fest installierten, schienengebundenen Regalbediengeräten bezeichnet. In Hochregallagern werden Regalhöhen ab etwa zwölf Metern bis zu 50 Metern in Silobauweise verwendet, bei der die Regalkonstruktion auch Dach und Wände des Lagerraumes trägt.

In Hochregallagern können viele Paletten auf geringer Fläche untergebracht und so hohe Flächenintensitäten pro Quadratmeter erreicht werden. Ein- und Auslagerung findet meistens im Automatikbetrieb statt.

Das Regalbediengerät (RBG) hat einen vertikalen Mast sowie eine Schienenführung oben und unten am Regalgang. Ein Hubwagen mit Lastaufnahmemittel (meistens eine Teleskopgabel) verfährt am Mast. Dabei wird eine Ladeeinheit am Ein- oder Auslagerpunkt aufgenommen und diagonal entlang der Regalfläche zum Zielfach transportiert. High-bay warehouses are high Rack systems equipped with fixed rail-mounted shelf pickers. High-bay warehouses feature rack heights from around twelve metres up to 50 metres in a silo Design, in which the racks form part of the supporting structure of the Warehouse's roof and walls.

In high-bay warehouses, a great many pallets can be accommodated on a small area to make maximum use of every square metre. The storage and retrieval processes usually take place automatically.

The automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) has a vertical mast and guide rails at the top and bottom of the aisle. A shuttle equipped with a load-handling attachment (usually a telescopic fork) moves along the mast. A load is collected at the storage or retrieval station and transported diagonally along the racking system to the target compartment. In a single cycle, the load-handling attachment performs either a storage or retrieval action

Las bodegas de estantes elevados son sistemas de estantería elevada equipados con selectores de anaquel montados en rieles fijos. Las bodegas de estantes elevados cuentan con alturas de estante de alrededor de 12 a 50 metros en un diseño de silo, en el cual los estantes forman parte de la estructura de soporte del techo y muros de la bodega.

En las bodegas de estantes elevados, se puede acomodar un gran número de en un área pequeña para maximizar el uso de cada metro cuadrado. Los procesos de almacenaje y recuperación se llevan a cabo usualmente de manera automática.

Los sistemas de almacenaje y recuperación automatizados (AS/RS) cuentan con un mástil vertical y rieles guía en la parte superior e inferior del pasillo. Un equipado con un (usualmente una horquilla telescópica) se mueve a lo largo del mástil. Se recoge una carga en la estación de almacenaje o de recuperación y es transportada diagonalmente a lo largo del sistema de estantería hasta el compartimiento de destino. En un ciclo único, el aditamento de manejo de carga lleva a cabo la acción de almacenaje o de recuperación; en un ciclo doble, ambas acciones se llevan a cabo en una misma secuencia.
