Festschmierstoff

Solid lubricant

Solid lubricants are intended to reduce Friction and Wear in the tribological system of moving assemblies. Due to their crystalline structure, particles can shear off in thin, platelet-like particles. The platelets are created due to the Lubricant molecules' net-like structure.

Solid lubricants reduce friction because the platelets' structure enables them to slide easily over each other. In addition to this, they smooth the component surfaces if tiny lubricant particles remain in the roughness pits when the components move in relation to each other. Solid lubricants are utilised when good viscosity behaviour is required due to high temperatures or where oils cannot be used.

They also act as Separating agents, for example to prevent blocking due to Corrosion or cold welding. They are used as coatings for Casting equipment, for sliding points that require no maintenance or additional treatment and to prevent friction oxidation. They may also form part of composite materials (e.g. in the case of sinter bearings).

Graphite, talcum, boron nitride, soft Metals and molybdenum disulphide are some of the main solid lubricants. They can be adapted to special applications - e.g. vacuums, high centrifugal forces or ionising radiation - or emulsified to create pastes or sprays.
