The difference between the controlled variable (actual value) and the reference variable w (setpoint value) is the control deviation e.

The value of the controlled variable at a given point in time is called the actual value and the value of the reference variable w the setpoint value.

Consequently, the controller responds in exactly the same way to a disturbance as to a change in the reference variable.
