Local cell

Local cells or local-action cells are small Corrosion sites that are barely detectable or undetectable to the naked eye. They occur where different Metals come into contact and an electrolyte (moisture, normally water) is present.

This causes the metals to form a galvanic cell that is short-circuited by the electrolyte. The less noble metal is subject to anodic degradation and its electrons flow to the more noble metal, which acts as a cathode. Oxonium ions are reduced here (for example, in the case of zinc sheets with Copper impurities). However, the process is triggered wherever metals with different potentials are connected by moisture.

Local cells are thus created if two metals are joined by Rivet/screw connections or weld seams, or if coatings are damaged. If moisture is present, this also poses a risk to less noble metals if they contain more noble metals in the form of impurities.

Local cells are the first sign of problems such as pitting corrosion. If they remain undetected, they can cause significant damage to a Material over time.
