Description:
Racks are machine elements that are usually used to convert a rotary motion into a straight-line motion or vice-versa. The are straight and feature evenly distributed teeth. In rack drives, a gearwheel engages with the gaps between the teeth on the rack. The geometry of a rack is that of a gearwheel that has been unwound. The pitch is the distance between one tooth and the next. Dividing the pitch by ? gives you the module. Just like gearwheels, racks can have involute, cycloid, pin or conchoidal gearing. If a rack and a gearwheel with involute gearing are combined, the teeth of the rack have a straight flank geometry.
