Heat treatment (steel)

During Heat treatment, the properties of Steel are changed through thermal, chemicothermal or mechanothermal processes so as to optimise them. A distinction is made between processes that change the material's Microstructure and those that change its surface. In both cases, the steel's structure is affected.

Microstructural transformations are achieved, for instance, through thermal Annealing and Hardening. Surface changes occur, for example, during chemicothermal processes such as carburising, case hardening or nitriding. Substances present in the environment (carbon, nitrogen) can influence the Material composition and properties.

A further distinction is made between production-related processes (such as Stress-relief annealing, Soft annealing and normalising) and stress-related processes (hardening, quenching and tempering, surface hardening, carburising, carbonitriding and nitriding). Other processes include Hardening and tempering, Tempering and ageing.

Steel in particular is exposed to a variety of temperatures during heat treatment (thermal cycle), kept at a specific temperature level for a holding time and then cooled. Cooling can take place in water, air, oil or polymer fluids and at different speeds (from slow furnace cooling to quenching) to make steel with the required hardness, Strength and Toughness and the desired (micro)structure.
