Wear

Wear is the term used to refer to Material losses that occur as a result of tribological (e.g. mechanical, Grinding, rolling, chemical and thermal) stresses. Various mechanisms and friction Work cause Friction partners to shed particles from the material surface, thereby changing their geometry.

Wear Resistance as a property of the tribosystem is influenced by

  • the material and the form of the body and counterbody,
  • the type of intermediary,
  • the temperature and
  • the type and speed of movement.

Items such as bearings, couplings, gears and the Cutting edges of tools are susceptible, with wear occurring on sliding surfaces, elements involved in torque transmission and secondary seals subject to dynamic stresses. However, increased sliding surface wear when components are being run in (running-in wear) ensures that the sliding surfaces adapt to each other.

A distinction is made between the following wear mechanisms:

  • Adhesion in the event of inadequate lubrication
  • Abrasion due to hard or sheared off particles (rubbings) in the intermediary
  • Rolling-contact fatigue and cracking due to alternating mechanical stresses
  • Oxidative wear due to reactions between the friction partners and the surrounding medium

Desgaste
