The staircase method is a key Material testing process for evaluating dynamic Strength characteristics. It enables all factors that influence Dynamic strength to be tested in such a way as to be able to indicate a specific probability of survival or fracture (mostly 50 percent).
The process involves testing several samples in succession at several load stages. If the sample fractures during the test, the subsequent load is reduced. If a sample reaches the limit number of stress cycles without fracturing, the load is increased.
The test is then evaluated arithmetically to determine the mean value and the Standard deviation to the supportable stress. The staircase method determines the mean value with good reliability, but results for standard deviation lack precision.
The staircase method can also be used to determine a material's confidence limits.
