Schmierstoff

Lubricant

Lubricants (lubricating agents) are substances that are used as intermediaries in a tribological system to reduce Friction and wear. They can transmit forces, cushion vibrations and protect against corrosion, too. Cooling and sealing lubricants are also in widespread use. It is important to optimise lubricants from both a technological and an economic perspective.

A distinction is made between

  • Non-premium (plain) oils
  • Oils comprising a base oil and small proportions of an additive
  • Synthetic oils
  • Greases
  • Solid lubricants

Most lubricants are based on mineral oils, often paraffins or naphthenic oils. Their specific viscosity depends on the shape and length of the hydrocarbon molecules and on their internal friction. Viscosity is key in determining their tribological function, i.e. separation of the contact partners.

A lubricant's viscosity depends to a great extent on the temperature, which means it needs to be selected in line with a temperature range.

Viscosity is determined by

  • Molecular structure
  • Pressure (higher pressure increases the viscosity)
  • Environmental medium (e.g. oxidation due to oxygen in the air, gumming)
  • Period of use (ageing of lubricants through degradation of the Chain molecules due to shear stress)

Lubricante

Aceites no premium (simples)
