Control stability

The stability of a Closed-loop control system indicates whether the aim of keeping the output value at the setpoint value is achieved. The feedback in the Control loop can cause undesirable instability in this loop. A control loop's stability is influenced by the properties of the Controlled system and the controller, but not by the selected input variable.

The stability of a control loop can be evaluated based on various criteria.

  • Hurwitz stability criterion: The Hurwitz criterion is suitable for checking stability but not for designing a controller, because it is not possible to directly ascertain how a controller's parameters and structure influence stability. This criterion is also unsuitable for dead-time elements.
  • Nyquist stability criterion: The Nyquist criterion is a graphical process based on the Transfer curve of the frequency response of the open control loop. The position of the transfer curve in relation to the critical point (-1
