Bei der Kommissionierung werden kunden- oder produktionsgerecht sowie auftragsbezogen Bedarfsmengen eines oder mehrerer Artikel zusammengestellt.
Bei der Kommissionszusammenstellung werden Güter aus größeren Artikelmengen entnommen. Die Artikel werden dann zusammengeführt und zum Versand bereitgestellt.
Die Kommissionierung verursacht häufig hohe Personalkosten und hohen finanziellen Aufwand für technische Lösungen sowie Betriebskosten in den zunehmend komplexeren Kommissionierungssystemen. Deswegen wird heute zunehmend auf ein gutes Zusammenwirken und eine optimale Systematik von technischen Bereichen, der Ablauf- und Organisationsstruktur und des Informationsmanagements geachtet.
