Glas

Glass

Glass is the name used for all materials that have an amorphous structure. Although most glasses are made of silicon dioxide, they can also take the form of amorphously solidified Metals or minerals. Despite having a different chemical composition, numerous Plastics also qualify as glasses due to their amorphous structure (Plexiglas, acrylic glass). These are called organic glasses.

The amorphous structure of glass is obtained by cooling a melt very rapidly (supercooling). In the case of most inorganic materials, this enables nucleation to take place but leaves no time for the crystallisation process.

Silicate glass made from silicon dioxide is the most common inorganic, synthetic glass. Depending on which oxide (e.g. boron, phosphate, aluminium) is also added, borosilicate, phosphate-silicate and aluminosilicate glasses can also be produced. Pure silicate glass is called silica glass or quartz glass.

A distinction is also made based on the production process used:

  • Hollow glass for bottles or similar items (press-and-blow, rotary blowing or blow-and-blow process)
  • Flat glass for window or automotive glass, mirrors and tempered glass (Pilkington (float glass), drawing or Rolling process)
  • Special glass for all kinds of applications such as fibre-optic cables, glass wool or glass fibre reinforced plastics (Extrusion, spinning process, etc.)
  • Tubular glass (drawing and centrifuging process)

Glass can be hardened for numerous applications by Coating it with dielectric Material or using chemical/physical gas phase separation (e.g. for optical equipment). For other purposes (such as light scattering), it can be roughened (satinised) either chemically or by means of sandblasting. Various processes can be used to make the glass surface last longer.

Vidrio
