Theory of elasticity

The theory of elasticity focuses on the elastic behaviour of materials in Strength theory and stands in contrast to the theory of plasticity. The theory of elasticity describes the behaviour of a component that is subjected to elastic and thus reversible deformation.

In the theory of elasticity, the interaction between stress $\sigma $ and strain $\varepsilon $ / shear $\gamma $ is proportional. The Modulus of elasticity E and the shear modulus (modulus of rigidity) G are the relevant proportionality factors.

Tensile testing provides one example of elastic behaviour. When the load is first applied, the stress and strain are proportional. Hooke's law describes this relationship as follows: \[\sigma =E\cdot \varepsilon \]
