Push principle

Description: The push principle is a method of production planning. It is the opposite of the Pull principle. When applying the push principle, the production and flow of materials in a manufacturing plant are controlled by a central unit. This unit ensures that materials, parts and products are 'pushed' through the entire production Chain according to a predetermined plan. Production planning and control (PPC) systems are usually used to manage production and can access all manufacturing processes and resources. The timings of the various steps in the production process are precisely defined. The benefits of the push principle are that all goods along the chain are readily available and machines and personnel are utilised to their full capacity. Excellent supply availability is virtually guaranteed. The disadvantage is high capital tie-up due to high stock levels (waste/muda). What's more, the production system is limited in how it can respond to short-term changes (customer requirements, diversification of product range, additional orders).
