Description: Structural steels are Steel grades that are used as construction materials under normal atmospheric conditions, that is to say they exhibit sufficient temperature and corrosion Resistance. Such steels should be suitable for cold Forming, deep drawing, Stretch forming, Rolling and crack-free edging. They are not intended for Heat treatment. What's more, they must be suitable for welding, fusion Welding after pre-heating and welding with electrodes. They are predominantly used in architectural, civil, plant and automotive engineering. A crude steel is turned into a structural steel by reducing the accompanying element content and increasing the proportion of pearlite by raising the manganese content and performing normalising rolling. A finer grain can be created by carrying out ladle treatment of the molten steel. Grades with different levels of protection against brittle fracture can be produced in this way. Stronger structural steels are now increasingly being used to achieve both Material and weight savings. The inferior cold formability associated with these steels is overcome on a metallurgical basis by limiting certain alloying constituents and combinations (microalloying) and through thermomechanical treatment. As a result, these steels retain both their weldability and their cold Toughness. A distinction is made between austenitic steels (good cold toughness and Corrosion resistance, ageable, transformation-free, heat-resistant and unmagnetisable) and ferritic steels. Unalloyed ferritic steels are brittle when cold and exhibit excellent weldability but poor resistance to corrosion. Alloyed ferritic steels, on the other hand, benefit from better corrosion resistance and are also resistant to oxidising and sulphurous gases.
