Product Ergonomics focuses on the development of user-friendly products, such as vehicles, working materials and tools. All improvements and/or optimisations that are made to the products must factor in relevant working conditions such as the working environment and tasks (Production ergonomics). Product ergonomics deals with the optimisation of the human/machine interface, the Design of sensory interfaces (e.g. monitors) and physically operated interfaces (e.g. control elements, tools). Factors in the working environment such as the climate, noise, Lighting, hazardous substances and mechanical vibrations have a direct influence on product ergonomics. Ergonomic products should exhibit maximum functionality in keeping with human capabilities so as to prevent premature fatigue, physical strain, impaired performance and hazards. Product ergonomics is closely linked to preventive occupational health and safety and the improvement of product safety. Product ergonomics is also known as microergonomics.
