Working surface

A working surface is a surface of adequate size that can be used for carrying out various types of Work.

The amount of surface area that is required varies according to the specific activities that are to be conducted and the working materials that are required. The working surface must allow the flexible arrangement of resources such as monitors, keyboards and mats. If numerous employees are sharing one workstation (as during shift work), the working surface should be height-adjustable.

Free-standing working surfaces should measure at least 0.80 by 1.60 metres. If the surface is up against a wall, it may need to be larger, depending on the activity and resources in question. The surface should be matt, not too dark and minimise reflections. When desk-type activities are being carried out on a working surface, a warm Material is beneficial, as it prevents the user's wrists from becoming cold.

It may be useful to incline the working surface slightly, as this ensures the user can see everything on the table top with ease.
