Wood-particle materials

Wood-particle materials are made from particles of solid Wood and sawmill remnants, synthetic-resin glues and additives by applying pressure and heat They have become the most important wood derivatives.

The main raw Material used is coniferous wood, which is broken up in chippers and flakers. Besides wood particles, alternative raw materials such as flax shives, bamboo and straw can also be used.

In the case of machine screening, the particles are sieved before being glued using a glue liquor and spread out to form a mat. This is pressed into boards in continuous-process, single-daylight and multi-daylight presses at temperatures of around 200°C. The boards are then completed by conditioning, sanding and trimming them.

Wood-particle materials are the most commonly used wood derivatives. Examples include:

  • Flat-pressed particle board
  • Extruded particle board
  • Oriented strand board (OSB)
