Rapid prototyping

Rapid prototyping is a Generative production process for free-formed solids (solid freeform manufacturing) that cuts development times and can help get products to market faster.

Applications during the Design process include the production of models that can be used to inspect a product, make alterations and check dimensions and functionality. Rapid prototyping requires a complete and consistent 3D CAD model, as well as high-performance computers, numerical control technology, 3D printing processes and suitable modelling materials.

Suitable modelling materials include Ceramics and Plastics that cure on exposure to heat or UV light (in liquid, powder, film, extruded Material or paper form). Today, models are also being produced directly using metal.

Rapid prototyping complements developments that are the result of collaborations between numerous departments, such as in Simultaneous engineering.
