PDCA

PDCA (plan - do - check - act) is a Lean management acronym. It describes a Quality assurance cycle that is applied, in particular, during Kaizen processes at the place of value creation (Gemba) and with the involvement of the workforce.

PDCA comprises the following elements:

  • Plan: The on-site team leader analyses the current state of a production unit, identifies the potential for improvement and develops a new concept.
  • Do: The concept is tested and optimised.
  • Check: The concept is scrutinised via audits, for example, and is fixed as a production Standard.
  • Act: The new production standard is rolled out by modifying the production system and reorganising the activities of personnel.

The new standard is also continuously assessed and improved as part of a Kaizen system. This in turn generates renewed PDCA cycles.

A Deming cycle (Deming wheel) and Shewhart cycle are largely the same as a PDCA cycle.

PDCA
