Male (plug) gauges are traditionally used to check internal threads and female (ring) gauges to check external threads.

In the case of optical measurement, microscopes are used to determine external thread sizes by applying the contactless silhouette method.

The measuring instrument needs to cover at least two turns of the thread to measure the outside diameter of external threads or the core diameter of internal threads.
