Dimensional tolerance

Dimensional tolerances are essential because workpieces cannot be manufactured with absolute precision to a Nominal dimension without exceeding justifiable outlay.

Consequently, the Actual dimension measured on a workpiece must fall within a dimensional Tolerance. Dimensional tolerance is defined by the limit sizes - the maximum and minimum dimensions. The difference between the two limit sizes is the dimensional tolerance, which is also determined by size and position.

The permissible size of dimensional tolerance is determined by basic and/or international tolerances, which are in turn determined according to nominal dimension ranges and basic tolerances.

When specifying dimensional tolerance, it is also important to take into account the tolerances of the measurement technology that is being used.
