Corrosion

Corrosion is the physico-chemical reaction of metallic materials with their environment, which converts them into corrosion products (such as rust) and, by so doing, impairs the functionality of components or systems. Corrosion products can adhere firmly or be loose or soluble. The component's functionality needs to be impaired before it is regarded as exhibiting corrosion damage.

Possibilities include:

  • Chemical reactions between Material and gases - the corrosion product grows in layers and becomes thicker as a result of diffusion
  • Metallophysical reactions (e.g. temperature-induced) - metal atoms are separated from their environment, which can lead to lattice conversions and the formation of compounds with other elements. This in turn results in hydride formation, decarburisation, embrittlement or cracking.
  • Electrochemical reactions involving electricity and ion-conducting media (mostly water) that act as electrolytes - the component and medium combine to create a galvanic cell.

Consequences of corrosion:

  • Surface damage - notch effects compromise the fatigue Strength of components that are subject to dynamic stresses.
  • Increases in volume due to an adhering corrosion product that causes ruptures or blockages.
  • A Reduction in cross-section which, in the event of significant strain under load, can lead to elevated stresses, deformation, leaks and fractures.

A distinction is made, for example, between the following types of corrosion:

  • Pitting corrosion
  • General corrosion
  • Stress-corrosion cracking
  • Corrosion fatigue
  • Intercrystalline corrosion
  • Filiform corrosion

Korrosion

  • Spannungsrisskorrosion
  • Schwingungsrisskorrosion
  • Interkristalline Korrosion
  • Unterwanderungskorrosion
