Crosshair scanning can be used to measure outside and core diameters.

Threads are defined by their outside diameter, core diameter, pitch diameter, profile angle and pitch.

The measuring instrument needs to cover at least two turns of the thread to measure the outside diameter of external threads or the core diameter of internal threads.
