Basic shaft

A basic Shaft is one of the systems of Fit employed in Mechanical engineering to avoid large numbers of tolerances. In the case of a basic shaft, the shaft in a fit is manufactured in a standardised process, while the corresponding Tolerance is transferred to the hole.

This means manufacturing the basic shaft from a cylindrical Material that has already been produced with the final dimension. The components mounted on the shaft are then produced individually, e.g. by being drilled to the correct size and to ensure the correct fit (e.g. press fit, clearance fit).

The basic shaft is encountered less often than the Basic hole. The method is employed in applications such as long shafts in transmissions, on agricultural equipment and on textile machinery.
