English

washer (Neuter)

Description: Washers are used for screw connections that pass through large holes or slots. They are placed underneath the screw head and/or the Nut so that the pretension Force is transferred over a larger area when the screw is tightened. Washers are also used when the substrate is softer than the screw head or nut. Furthermore, they are required if the screw axis is not perpendicular to the Bearing surface, for example in the case of U/I-beam screw connections. The outside diameter of the washer should be almost twice the diameter of the hole when connecting metal parts and three times the diameter of the hole in the case of wooden joints. Both square and round washers are available in various materials along with extra-wide designs for connecting thin metal sheets.
