Description:
In the case of the Zener effect, high doping creates a very thin depletion layer. In the case of the avalanche effect, low doping creates a relatively wide depletion layer. Applying an external voltage in the conducting direction - the diode works in the on-state region - reduces the potential barrier in the depletion layer and the diffusion current increases exponentially.
