Pull principle

Description: The pull principle is a concept for the Material flow in a production system. It stipulates that a processing station in a value-added Chain should only be activated when the station downstream from it or a customer has requested its services. In manufacturing environments, a customer order triggers the production of the product. Downstream Assembly stations each order the quantity of parts that they need for manufacturing purposes from upstream stations. This means that companies can avoid large-Scale stockkeeping and reduce Work in progress. In order to implement the pull principle effectively, companies should smooth the production sequence (Heijunka). Individual production stations need to be synchronised to the extent that the quantity ordered can be manufactured and supplied in the perfect tempo.
