Stress resultants
Description:
Stress resultants are the internal forces and moments in a system as revealed by 'Cutting through' a body at a certain point to create a cross-section. Based on the physical fact that internal and external forces are always balanced, it is possible to determine the forces by creating an Equilibrium of forces in the isolated system. Viewed two-dimensionally, there are three stress resultants per cut face. The cut face is the cross-section created by 'cutting through' the body. If the normal Force N acts in the direction of the global coordinate axis, the cut face is positive and otherwise it is negative. The transverse force Q is defined acting downwards on the positive cut face. The moment MS here acts in the positive direction, i.e. anti-clockwise.
