Description:
In the case of a body that is in planar motion, the instantaneous centre of Rotation M (or simply instantaneous centre) is the point on that body that is acting as the centre of rotation at a given point in time t. At this specific instant, the movement can be replaced by an infinitesimally small moment around the instantaneous centre of rotation. The point where the relevant perpendiculars of two Velocity vectors intersect is the instantaneous centre of rotation. During this infinitesimally short moment in time, it is motionless. When the frame of reference is fixed in space, all the instantaneous centres of rotation over the relevant period of time are depicted by the fixed centrode (also known as the space centrode). When the frame of reference is fixed on the body, a moving centrode (also known as a body centrode) depicts the instantaneous centres of rotation. Both are referred to as centrodes.
