Plasma transferred arc welding

Plasma transferred arc welding is a process used to apply metallic Surface finishing layers to components that are usually made of simple, low-cost base materials.

A plasma torch with a pilot arc and a transferred arc (plasma transferred arc - PTA) is normally used, with the pilot arc ignited between a tungsten electrode and the plasma nozzle. The pilot arc accelerates the plasma, which is generated between the anode and cathode from shielding gases (such as argon). The main arc can thus be ignited and used to melt the base material. The plasma beam heats the metal powder and also acts as a carrier beam, transferring the powder to the surface of the workpiece, where it is melted completely in the melt pool.

Only small areas of the workpiece surface are melted and mixed through in this process, which also supports high application rates.
