Taylor principle

Functional workpiece testing using gauges is based on the Taylor principle.

The gauge can take the form of an adjacent counterpart (for edges or surfaces) or be defined by the axis of a circular cylinder - as a mandrel for bores or a chuck for shafts, for example.

The principle is applied prior to defining positional and form tolerances. It states that only a component without any additional errors of form exhibits a minimum clearance in the case of maximum Material limits. A rigid gauge must thus form the envelope, i.e. the ideally shaped counterpart of a workpiece. The gauge's tolerances should be selected so as to ensure that no defective workpieces are identified as being OK.

When applying an addition to the Taylor Principle by Weinhold and working with a test piece with Maximum material requirements, the clearance between mandrel and bore is also included in the test. A corresponding test gauge covers the toleranced area of the workpiece shape and its limit condition.
