Soldered joint

A soldered Joint is a Bonded connection between two metallic components that is created using a filler metal (the solder) and by applying heat. The solder's adhesion to the component surface (adhesive Force) and its internal Strength (cohesive force) determine the soldered joint's durability. This is influenced by the solder used, the joint clearance, the soldered surface and its pretreatment, the base material, the Design and the Soldering process.

The joint clearance must have an adequate capillary action and must not obstruct the flow of the solder. Consequently, parts to be soldered must Fit properly, the gap between them must be consistent and the solder flow path must not be too long.

The solder's melting point is lower than that of the base material, so it is generally only possible to use soldered joints if the component's operating temperature is below the solder's melting point. One exception is TLP (transient liquid phase) bonding, because this process increases the solder material's melting point.
