Tribooxidation

Oxidative wear

Oxidative wear or tribochemical wear is Wear resulting from tribological stresses due to chemical reactions. This creates reaction products on the surface layers of the Friction partners that are deposited as intermediate layers (e.g. oxidation layers) and mechanically destroyed as a result of relative movements between the bodies. Oxidative wear is almost always associated with simultaneous Adhesive wear and often occurs at hot spots.

A well-known form of oxidative wear is cocoa, which can occur at shrink joints in Steel. The ingress of air activates and oxidises the steel's surface atoms.

Metals with no chemical Resistance are at risk, but noble metals, Ceramics and Plastics are not susceptible to oxidative wear.

Tribochemical reactions can, however, also lead to desirable boundary layers, such as oxide formation on the surface of a component (passivation). Appropriate lubricants also use tribochemical reactions to build up thin boundary layers with good slip properties.

Desgaste oxidativo
