Mixed-Model-Production

Mixed-model production

Mixed-model production is a Lean management concept that uses the one-piece-flow method. It can be used to produce small volumes and even individual articles to specific customer requirements.

Often, when producing large series, companies will manufacture all the articles in that series sequentially, so as to minimise setup times and maximise machine utilisation. However, when running this type of series production, fluctuations in demand can lead to large Work-in-progress and Warehouse inventories and overproduction, which are regarded as waste (Muda) in the lean philosophy and are thus to be avoided.

Mixed-model production systems avoid waste because they do not produce all the articles in a batch at once, but instead manufacture products from a range of batches according to customer demand in a product mix. This makes it easier to adapt production systems to fluctuating demand.

A concept for minimising unproductive changeover times (such as the Single-Minute Exchange of Die method) must be developed to ensure that the machinery in a mixed-model production system can be changed over quickly.
