Eisen

Iron

Iron is a ferromagnetic chemical element (Fe) and a transition metal. 'Iron' primarily refers to cast iron, while steels are called 'ferrous metals'. Iron is produced in blast, Shaft or fluidised-bed furnaces and retorts by chemically reducing the iron oxide to produce iron ores with carbon.

Iron is resistant in dry air but oxidises under the effects of moisture or water to create hydrated iron oxide (rusting). A body exposed to atmospheric oxygen can oxidise completely, as its oxides do not form a protective layer. Dry heating (tempering) produces a layer of iron(II, III) oxide.

At Room temperature and up to a temperature of 910°C, pure iron is produced as a ferrite or iron with a body-centred cubic crystal structure. If this temperature is exceeded, the iron is transformed into iron (austenite) with a face-centred cubic structure. Above 1,390 °C and up to the melting point of around 1,535°C, ferrite again occurs as a body-centred cubic ferrite.

When combined with non-Metals such as sulphur, phosphorus, silicon and Carbon and heated, iron forms salts (e.g. iron(II) sulphide, phosphides, silicides and carbides).

Iron is the main alloying constituent in Steel grades. It ensures good Strength and Toughness in other alloys, too (nickel, molybdenum and chromium, for example).

On an industrial scale, its magnetic properties make it suitable for use in electromagnetic components (such as generators, transformers and electric motors) - either on its own or in alloys with silicon, aluminium, Nickel or cobalt.

A distinction is made between:

  • Pig iron (4 to 5 percent carbon and fractions of sulphur, phosphorus or silicon)
  • Cast iron (2.06 to 6.67 percent carbon and silicon/manganese)
  • Steel (0.06 to 2.06 percent carbon) is used in numerous alloys

Bivalent and trivalent iron salts are used in a large number of technical applications such as gas desulphurisation and phosphate elimination, for Etching printed circuit boards and as a flocculant.

Hierro
