An end quench test (Jominy test) enables the hardenability of different steels to be compared and the resultant microstructures to be evaluated. The notched bar impact Strength of the various microstructures can also be determined.

The end quench test is a Material test.

The test piece required is a round bar of the Steel to be tested with a diameter of 25 mm and a length of 100 mm. The sample is heated to 950°C and austenitised for 30 minutes. A jet of water conditioned to 20°C is then used to quench it from its bottom end for ten minutes.

Starting from the end face, the sample cools at different rates. This results in different microstructures and hardnesses. Metallographic testing is used to determine the resultant microstructures along a ground chamfer and the hardness is defined as a function of the distance from the end face.
