Aluminium alloy

Aluminium is primarily alloyed with magnesium, silicon, copper, manganese and zinc with the aim of enhancing its mechanical properties through precipitation Hardening and the formation of interstitial or substitutional solid solutions. Corrosion Resistance is usually retained, except when Forming an Alloy with copper.

Aluminium's natural oxide layer can be reinforced with phosphate or chromate layers that are produced in acidic or alkaline baths.

Some examples of the effects of alloying elements are as follows:

  • Manganese improves high-temperature stability and alkali resistance.
  • Silicon lowers the melting point.
  • Magnesium results in enhanced Corrosion resistance.
  • Copper improves mechanical properties through precipitation hardening.
